Currency & Payment in Türkiye
Currency:
The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). Banknotes come in denominations from 5 to 200 TRY. Prices in tourist areas may be listed in euros or dollars, but transactions are completed in lira.
Payments:
Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, malls, and transport hubs. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely used. Some small shops and rural businesses accept only cash, so always carry some lira.
ATMs:
Available throughout the country. Use ATMs connected to major banks (Ziraat, Garanti BBVA, Yapı Kredi) to avoid high withdrawal fees. Most ATMs offer an English-language interface and accept international cards.
Currency Exchange:
Exchange offices are found in airports, city centers, and tourist zones. Rates at local exchange bureaus are often better than those at hotels or airports. Avoid unregulated street exchangers.
Tipping:
Not required, but appreciated. Round up or leave 5–10% in restaurants, cafés, or for taxi drivers. In hotels, 20–50 TRY is typical for bellhops or housekeeping for extended stays.
